EMJOS is the junior squad for the East Midlands clubs – we are a dynamic group of 11 to 18 year olds who want to develop our orienteering skills and fitness with other determined younger athletes. The squad provides the coaching opportunities to improve from club standard to being able to run well at national competitions (British Championships and JK) and aiming higher still to the Talent Squad and ultimately the Great Britain teams that compete in European and World level competitions.
EMJOS squad activities include training days in the East Midlands or adjacent regions, as well as residential weekend trips – the focus is on improving orienteering skills including running fitness, help developing training plans and diet.

The national organisation JROS (we are one of the 12 regional squads, Junior Regional Orienteering Squads) organises five summer training camps in Scotland, Czechia and Sweden, where orienteering age groups 14 to 18 year olds, are given opportunities to train on superb technical terrain with the guidance from world class elite athletes and coaches. To be considered for a camp, during the spring period there are about 5 selection races (expected to attend 2-3 competitions) to achieve good Gold/Championship results. The lists of successful athletes are announced shortly after the British Championships.
EMJOS also encourage juniors to take part in other junior focused competitions such as the British Schools Individual and Score competitions (BSOA – Home Page), Interland competition (England vs. teams from Europe, Orienteering England), the JK and the British Championship junior relays – where we encourage and assist combined club teams if junior numbers are low.
The prestigious junior competition is the Junior Inter Regional Championships (JIRCS), hosted by one of the 12 JROS regions at the end of September. Travelling and staying over is all part of the experience of competing and representing the East Midlands, in an individual race (M/W14, M/W 16 and M/W18) and Sunday relays. The Saturday night entertainment (organised by the juniors for the juniors) has always maximised enjoying being together and having fun.
